Fremont Solstice Parade with Zero Waste Seattle

Happy SUMMER from Stone Soup Gardens!

The Fremont Solstice Parade was a huge hit and Stone Soup Gardens in partnership with Zero Waste Seattle had a blast!  Our group’s title was Under the Sea Trash Jubilee and our focus this year was collective waste found in the pacific gyre.  Our waste-themed entourage danced and growled our way through the crowds with J.B. leading the plastic bottle moray eel, Ben carrying the head of our cardboard walrus, Brian bouncing around in our plastic bottle puffer fish, and Dusty and Jake working up a sweat as Bag Monsters! We were also joined by students from the week long Om Culture Solstice Parade Art for Social Change summer camp led by Jake.  Camp was a ton of fun!  Kiddos studied the effects of waste on our oceans and developed costumes made entirely out of trash including several mermaids, a clam, some umbrella jellyfish, and a mini bag monster! 

Our under-the-Sea Trash Jubilee also featured a life size, 32 foot grey whale made from plastic bags and bottles!  This whale, funded by Thurston County Waste Management was designed by Carrie Ziegler with the help of 900 volunteers and swam all the way from Olympia to march with us!
