What's that you say?  Chickens?  In the Library?  That's right!  Stone Soup Gardens Mobile Chicken Coop is on the move.  We are headed to the Seattle Central Library - Faye G. Allen Children's Center to be part of the very important Food Literacy Month.

Our fabulous flock of ladies will be on hand to hold, coddle, strut, and generally rule the library roost.  We will be talking about chicken breeds, raising chickens, and about how awesome they are at providing laughs, constant compost, and of course, eggs!  It will be a great occasion to connect your youngster, or you, to the full meaning of Food Literacy.  All ages welcome.

Interested in attending?

Lots of Logs

8/17/2015

Logs are a misunderstood garden tool.  Logs can be used in a variety of ways, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to create unique eye-catching elements in any garden.  They are also affordable, long lasting, and readily available.

For this client, we installed a lovely raingarden in the front yard to catch the roof runoff.  It was a great way for the client to take advantage of the RainWise Program rebate, while also having space in the budget to create more usable area for gardening.

For the edges of the yard, we created a tiered raised bed system using a variety of logs, both large and small. We incorporated a log pathway from the sidewalk into the yard to make the beds more accessible, as well as several round logs within the bed to use stepping stones.

It was great to see all of the edible plants flourishing in the newly installed beds.  I must say that the tomatoes looked scrumptious, and the cucumber I was given by the owner was an excellent addition to dinner that evening!

For the love of the Hexagon

One of our designers, Aaron Buchholz, had a great idea for this contemporary space.  The backyard was simply a patch of grass, but our clients wanted something that spoke more to the design of the home.  By adding a brick patio, we created a more useful area for year round entertaining, while the addition of the raised planting beds will give an accessible way to incorporate different levels of planting space.

Taking the boxy shape of the house, Aaron created the patio using hexagons and gently curving paths to create a more eye-catching landscape. To mimic this, he included a couple of seating areas in the hexagon shape, while also creating rectangular beds with a similar hexagon point.

Now that we've completed the patio and beds, we'll plant out the space to enhance the curves and angles which will create a dynamic new backyard oasis.
