Mushrooms Galore!

9/24/2014

Picture
At the end of last year I chopped down a birch tree in my yard.  I had a bunch of logs laying around, and decided the best thing to do with such bounty was to create a mushroom patch in my yard.

I inoculated several logs with oyster mushroom spores, and created a space for wine caps to flourish.  And boy have they ever!  This picture shows me with the bounty of one night's fruiting.  Mushroom gravy, mushroom omelettes, mushroom biscuits, mushrooms with pasta, mushroom soup, yum!

Just today I went out to check on my logs and prepare a water bath for them as the rains come, and look what I found.  My first oyster of the season.  I can't wait!

Harvest Fair Photos

9/16/2014

We had a wonderful time at Harvest Fair! The weather was awesome, the people were bountiful, and our birds were very busy being held and greeted by the fair goers.  What a wonderful way to celebrate harvest time.  Seattle Tilth is a great organization and has a knack for bringing the Seattle community together.  If you were able to stop by our booth at the harvest fair, thanks for coming out! If not, we hope to see you next year.

A Beauty of a Coop

9/10/2014

It's no secret that I love chickens.  I have chickens, I teach about chickens, I visit places with my chickens, and sometimes I get to build awesome coops for clients' chickens. Life is good.

We just finished this little beauty of a coop.  The client wanted to put the coop in a nestled spot near the stairs where they could easily be tended to and enjoyed while sitting outside on the patio.  We included several small perches in the design, with the added benefit of rocks and a tree for roosting.   The yellow paint created a bright touch of color, and an edible roof of strawberries and herbs completed their new home. We've already heard back from the client that her birds are in love with their new coop!

Are you interested in creating a better space for your birds?  Perhaps you are interested in chickens but have taken the big step yet?  Contact Stone Soup Gardens today!  We can design and build the perfect coop for you and your ladies, or, attend our Joy of Chickens class to learn all that you need to know about raising chickens and breed selection!

Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair, here we come!

It's that fabulous time of year again!  The chickens and I always look forward to the Harvest Fair.  It is such a pleasure to connect with our great community of friends, and to meet new faces! Stop by our booth, say hello, and hold a chicken!
